The new year has arrived, and here in Texas, we’re ready to make some resolutions. But this year, instead of the usual January aspirations that feel like punishments, we’re trying something different. We’re making three fun New Year’s cooking resolutions.

Why New Year’s cooking resolutions? We realized that much of our home life revolves around food and the kitchen, so we figured the more joy we could add to this daily routine, the happier we would be. So take a look, follow our lead, and try to add some of these New Year’s cooking resolutions into your 2023.

New Year’s Cooking Resolutions #1 – Have Breakfast as a Family

You’ve heard it a million times before, but breakfast really is the most important nutritional meal of the day. But did you know that eating meals as a family is also emotionally important as well? That’s right, studies have shown that meals with loved ones provide nutrition for both the body and the soul. That’s as good as it gets.

I know you’re skeptical. A daily family breakfast sounds impossible, but trust us, it’s not! It just requires some preplanning and a commitment from everyone involved.

Here are some tips to make this New Year’s cooking resolution a success:

  • Make breakfasts in bulk. Try banana-nut bread or our beefy muffin-pan egg bites.
  • Get up just a little earlier than usual, and set aside at least 10 minutes to sit down as a family and eat.

New Year’s Cooking Resolutions #2 – Teach the Kids to Cook

When raising school-aged children, it can be easy to miss some of life’s more practical learning moments. One of the simplest to overlook is teaching your kids how to cook.

Cooking is a crucial life skill that everyone can use. In fact, getting your family involved in the kitchen is not only educational, but it’s also a wonderful bonding experience and a great way to spend extra time together. If your kids understand food early on, they’ll have a positive attitude toward healthy eating for a lifetime.

Here are some tips to make this New Year’s cooking resolution a success:

  • Get a kitchen stand for your toddlers so they can see what’s happening on the counters.
  • Find some child-safe cooking tools so the little ones can participate.
  • Try some of our easy recipes and plan age-appropriate cooking tasks.

New Year’s Cooking Resolutions #3 – Add an Exciting Twist

We all have our favorite comfort meals. Here on the ranch, if we don’t serve meatloaf, pot roast, and chicken fried steak at least once a month, there could be a rebellion! But every now and then, even these family staples need a breath of fresh air. That’s why this New Year’s cooking resolution is about adding a little pizzazz to your old standbys.

Don’t worry. We’re not talking about permanent changes, spending more money, or getting fancy. Start slow. Add an ingredient you haven’t used before, or try a similar dish from a cuisine you’ve never explored. Keep it simple, and have fun! Who knows, you just might discover a new family favorite.

Here are some tips to make this New Year’s cooking resolution a success:

  • Choose five dishes you usually cook for your family and do a little research on variations.
  • Try a new sauce or a different side dish, or add a delicious new ingredient. Check out our Cheesy Smoked Meatloaf for inspiration.
