Make Steak Fajitas From Scratch

December 28, 2020

Making steak fajitas on the grill

In Texas, everyone loves fajitas. Those thin slices of citrusy, spicy beef, sautéed onions, peppers, and all those fresh sides. It’s enough to make your mouth water just thinking about it. But did you know they taste even better when you make steak fajitas from scratch? Hold on tight! You’re in for a flavor fiesta.

Ingredients to Make Steak Fajitas

The first key when you make steak fajitas is to use a balanced marinade on the meat. This seasoning blend is a combination of spice, salt, and heat that will infuse the meat in just 30 minutes. It lends a surprising depth of flavor and works great with tacos, too.

  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Juice of 1 lime

The second important thing to remember is to use the freshest vegetables possible.

  • 1 yellow bell pepper
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 2 white onions
  • Cut all of these into finger-thick strips

Lastly, you need some beef, but not just any beef. You’re making steak fajitas from scratch. Try to get the best quality you can find. Premium Quality, grass-fed, grain-finished Skirt Steak or Flank Steak works best. Also, look for meat that is hormone and steroid free.

  • 1 1/2 pounds flat iron steak

Here at Texas Beef Company, we have a great selection of sustainably raised beef that we’ll deliver right to your door.

Easy Steps to Make Steak Fajitas

First, you need to whisk together the steak fajita marinade. Place the meat and the marinade in a plastic bag and let the steak marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Then, heat a pan over medium-high heat. Add some oil, the sliced onion, and peppers, season it with a little salt and cook until the edges of the onion are golden brown. This is a great time to start heating up your tortillas too.

Transfer the veggies to a separate dish, then sear the steak on both sides for roughly three to four minutes or until it’s done to your liking. Once seared, place the steak on a cutting board and let it rest for a few minutes then slice into thin strips.

Make a big platter with the from-scratch steak fajitas, the vegetables, and all the sides. Bring it out and watch the crowd go wild.
